PRETTY VALLEY FOSSICKING TRIP
TRIP M - Sunday 14th March 2010

NUMBERS ON THIS TRIP ARE RESTRICTED TO 25 BECAUSE OF THE SMALL AREA INVOLVED AND THE LIMITED WATER FLOW IN THE GULLY.
Therefore pre-order tickets will not be available for this trip.

Be at the car park at the rear of the Services Club ready to depart with your guide in convoy at 9.00am.  You must have a ticket ($11 adults, $4 children) which will be available on the morning before departure from 8.30am.

Travel time is about 30 minutes via the Red Range and Pinkett roads.  This involves crossing the roundabout at the intersection of Oliver St and the New England Highway.  The group will reassemble in front of the Seventh Day Adventist Church after crossing the highway.  After about 6 km turn right at the Pinkett road which is followed until 2-3 km past the Yarrow Creek bridge.  Then turn left along Pretty Valley road.  Keep straight ahead at the fork after about 2 km.  You should see the leading vehicles parked by the road about another 2 km further on.  Conventional vehicles will experience no difficulties as all travel is along normal roads.

This trip takes you to a swampy section of Bladey Grass Creek which is renowned for its dog tooth sapphire crystals and brilliant parti-colour sapphires.  Most of the cuttable stones found here are yellow.  Few stones exceed 5 carats in weight except some of the larger opaque sapphire crystals (corundum) which can go to 30 carats.  Good pink zircons are also found, along with high quality clear and smoky quartz.  You can expect to find sapphire, zircon, black tourmaline, black spinel, possibly clear and pale blue topaz and clear and smoky quartz.  A gem quality tourmaline crystal and a small gold nugget have also been found here so be prepared for anything.

The main thing in short supply is water for washing the black mud in which the stones are found. All participants must strictly obey the trip leader’s instructions on the areas to be used for washing.

Bring: shovel (preferably a long handled one), sieves, bucket (a steel drum is best so you can chop up the black mud before sieving it), tweezers, container for your finds (preferably plastic), crowbar, sun block cream, insect repellent, food and drink and sturdy footwear.
