2022 Fossicking Field Trips

Cost per person: Adult $25 | Child (16 and under) $10.
Each field trip has limited places available.

Getting to your field is by road trip Convoy, departing from the Showgrounds so please note vehicle requirements for each trip prior to booking your ticket/s.

WELLINGROVE – FIELD TRIP 1
Date: Friday 11 March, 2022
Skill level: Novice/Beginner – family friendly (with supervision)
Vehicle: 2WD – sealed road 15 – 20 minute drive
What you might find: Mainly sapphire, some garnet, spinel, & quartz
Other Information:
– Sapphire wash will be provided
– Trip leaders will provide instruction/demonstration
– Five minute drive to toilets
– Participants must bring their own digging implements and sieves – there is no equipment for hire on site

REDDESTONE CREEK – FIELD TRIP 2
Date: Saturday 12 March, 2022
Skill level: Novice/Beginner – family friendly (with supervision)
Vehicle: 2WD – 10klms of good dirt road 15 – 20 minute drive
What you might find: Sapphire and spinel
Other Information:
– Sapphire wash will be provided.
– Trip leaders will provide instruction/demonstration.
– Toilets on site
– Participants must bring their own digging implements and sieves – there is no equipment for hire on site.

REDDESTONE CREEK – FIELD TRIP 3
Date: Saturday 12 March, 2022
Skill level: Experienced only
Vehicle: 4WD ONLY – 10klms dirt road, then 4WD track
What you might find: Sapphire and spinel
Other Information:
– Be prepared for hard digging! Participants must bring their own digging implements and sieves – there is no equipment for hire.

OBAN RIVER – FIELD TRIP 4
Date: Sunday 13 March, 2022
Skill level: Experienced only
Vehicle: 4WD ONLY – Dirt road, bush track, fire trail.  45 – 60 minute drive.
What you might find: Sapphire, quartz, citrine, topaz, tourmaline, tin, gold
Other Information:
– Lots of digging and sieving in mullock heaps and creek beds. Participants must bring their own digging implements and sieves – there is no equipment for hire.

FIELD TRIP DEPARTURES

Where: Assemble each day in the signed meeting area at the Glen Innes Showgrounds.

When: 9.00 am sharp departure. Please arrive between 8am – 8.30am for registration. This is a good time to talk to others over a coffee or breakfast and it would be appreciated if all arrive in plenty of time to depart from Bourke St gate 9.00 am. Field trips conclude at 4pm. If you require to leave earlier, all attendees must advise their trip leader.

Indemnity Forms available at the registration area. It is a requirement that each individual and child has completed and signed indemnity form for the duration of Minerama Field Trips.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • All children must be supervised by adults.
  • Attendees to bring their own food & drinks/water as none will be supplied. Ensure you have plenty of food and water to last through the day.
  • Often field trip sites do not offer shade protection. Ensure you wear comfortable clothing, hats, sunscreen and sturdy shoes. Suggested clothing & personal items include; Long trousers, and long-sleeved shirt, sturdy walking shoes, boots, gumboots, work gloves, sunhat, sunscreen, insect repellent.
  • Attendees are required to bring their own fossicking equipment, available for purchase at the showgrounds or hire from the Glen Innes Visitor Information Centre. Suggested equipment include; pair of classifying sieves (coarse and fine), shovel, garden trowel or fork, hand pick, bucket, pair of tweezers, plastic bottle with lid or zip-lock plastic bag for your finds.
  • Registration between 8am and 8.30am at the Glen Innes Showground, convoy parking along Bourke Street. Meet the team leader and briefing session. Please bring your tickets to collect your wristbands.
  • In the case of extreme weather events field trips may be cancelled, in this circumstance tickets will be refunded.
  • Refunds will not be available for change of mind or non appearance, ticket terms and conditions available through or ticket provider.
  • You must familiarize yourself with the fossicking laws of NSW. Take special note that no holes greater than 1 metre in depth may be dug, no holes left unfilled at the end of the trip, and that tunneling and undermining are strictly prohibited.
  • Field trips are organised by Minerama and led by guides to private properties in the district. No person is to approach any landowner whose property we enter, about returning at a later date.
  • All instructions of field trip leaders and their assistants are to be obeyed, especially with regard to digging areas, boundaries, departure times, etc
 
 

Silversmithing Workshops – The Makers Shed

Make your unique piece of sterling-silver jewellery under skilled supervision during the annual Minerama Fossicking Gem & Jewellery Show in Glen Innes. Richard Moon (resident silversmith at The Makers Shed) is offering two studio-workshop options for a strict maximum of six people.

WORKSHOP 1: Half-day cabochon bezel-setting class.
When: Friday March 11, 1-4pm
Where: The Makers Shed, 123 Grey Street, Glen Innes
This is the workshop for those with a cabochon stone (flat-backed, not faceted) which they’d like to learn how to set into a simple sterling-silver pendant. Richard will assist you to design your piece then guide you through the cutting and soldering processes before he shows you how to set your stone. The cost includes enough sterling and fine silver for one pendant.

WORKSHOP 2: Full-day sterling-silver experience
When: Saturday March 12, 10am-4pm
Where:
The Makers Shed, 123 Grey Street, Glen Innes
Get across the entire silversmithing process with Richard as your guide, from designing your piece through to cutting, soldering, heating, cold-connecting, fold-forming, bezel-setting and polishing. The cost includes enough sterling silver for one ring, pendant, brooch or pair of earrings; and a limited selection of raw materials and stones: vintage linoleum, copper, leather, moonstones, freshwater pearls, etc. Design and make something special!
